Basra Gate Iraq Masterplan is a large-scale urban development planned as a complementary city to Basra, strategically located across the Shatt Al Arab River, designed to support long-term residential, economic, and infrastructure growth in southern Iraq.
Basra Gate Iraq Masterplan, also known as Al Basra New City (ABNC), is a comprehensive urban development project located opposite the historic city of Basra across the Shatt Al Arab River. The project builds on Basra’s historic role as Iraq’s primary maritime trade hub and its strategic proximity to the Great Al Faw Port, positioning the city as a new gateway for regional and international trade.
Prepared as part of Iraq’s national housing program, the master plan establishes a long-term framework for urban growth over the next 25 years. Approximately 45% of the total development area is allocated to residential use to address the growing housing demand in Basra, while the remainder supports industrial, commercial, and infrastructure development.
The master plan promotes sustainable urban growth by preserving cultural identity and environmental systems, while supporting employment, modern infrastructure, and long-term urban resilience in Basra.
